Plasma Treatments
Not to be confused with PRP (platelet-rich plasma), plasma
is an ionised gas that holds an electrical charge, and is
classified as the “fourth state of matter”, making up over
99.9% of the universe. Plasma energy is created when a gas
passes through an electromagnetic field to create ionised
gas particles in the air between the device tip and the skin.
This plasma can be focused into a stream of energy and
applied at atmospheric pressure to target many different
skin concerns.
1. Skin surface – kills germs and bacteria by breaking bacterial molecular structure
2. Epidermis – dramatically increase the skin absorption rate by temporarily breaking the cell adhesion molecules
3. Dermis – tightens aged skin and stimulates generation of collagen and fibroblasts
Plasma device
The plasma device that we use is a high power medical unit, not a handheld pen device. It is currently the only such system that is registered and listed as a medical device in Australia.
The system offers two distinct functions:
1 Plasma Surgical® – non-invasive treatments for eye rejuvenation (upper and lower blepharoplasty), crows feet, wrinkle reduction, skin tag removal
2 Plasma Shower® – active acne, pigment removal, skin regeneration and tightening
Plasma Lid-Lift
A Plasma Lid-Lift is an alternative to invasive surgical blepharoplasty and is most suitable to patients who have a good brow height but have a slight excess of loose eyelid skin. Results vary between individuals, but for the right candidates results can be comparable to surgery with NO surgical incisions. For most patients, the results will be more subtle than a surgical blepharoplasty. This treatment uses a process known as ‘sublimation’ (think “vaporisation”) to effectively reduce the surface area of excess skin as well as triggering collagen renewal, leading to tightening of the skin over the subsequent weeks. A thin probe is used to target the plasma very precisely at the area required, and has revolutionised the way we are able to rejuvenate the delicate eye area, where the thickness of the skin is typically less than 1mm. How does a Plasma Lid-Lift work?
There are 4 states of matter – solid, liquid, gas and plasma. Plasma energy is created when a gas passes through an electromagnetic field to create ionised gas particles in the air between the device tip and the skin. By directing the plasma energy very precisely to the surface of the skin, tiny holes are created in the skin, turning solids into gas. Therefore, the plasma energy turns the skin to a gaseous state. This process is called sublimation.
When skin around the eyelids is treated with sublimation, the elastic fibres shrink, which tightens and retracts the skin around the eyes. The process also increases collagen manufacture as part of the healing response and so the results continue to improve over the subsequent weeks/months. The results of this treatment can be similar to those of a blepharoplasty (surgical eyelid lift) in certain patients. It is important to note that the plasma device does not damage the surrounding skin or the eye.
Am I a good candidate for a Plasma Lid-Lift?
The ideal candidate for this type of non-surgical skin tightening procedure is someone with a good brow height, no fat bulges around the eyes, but loose excess skin on either the upper and/or lower eyelids. There will be some patients for whom this technique is unlikely to achieve the desired result, in which case we may suggest either fractional laser or surgical blepharoplasty depending upon the individual issue.
Does a Plasma Lid-Lift hurt?
Not at all – we use local anaesthetic to the eyelid skin and the procedure is very comfortable. There is a slight smell as the skin is vaporised How long does a Plasma Lid-Lift take? Generally, this procedure takes 20-40 minutes depending upon the surface area to be treated. You are likely to be in the clinic for approximately one hour on your treatment day.
How much downtime is involved in a Plasma Lid- Lift?
The treatment is very much tailored to each individual and so downtimes can and will vary. In general, you should expect up to a week of mild swelling and up to 5-7 days of dotty scabbing, which can be covered with appropriate makeup if required after day 2. The skin can be tender for a few days whilst it is swollen. For some patients, there is a level of ongoing redness (erythema) of the treated skin for a few weeks.
How long does it take to see results?
Once the initial scabbing resolves, the skin will both look and feel smoother and more robust. However, as the treatment triggers collagen renewal within the skin, the end result will not be seen for up to 12 weeks.
What are the side effects of a Plasma Lid-Lift?
Medicine is not an exact science and as with any medical procedure there are some potential side effects of treatment, which can be minimised with correct patient selection and good technique. The expected side effects of a Plasma Lid-Lift are temporary redness and swelling of the eyelids, with some light scabbing in dots over the treatment area. There is the possibility of post-treatment skin infection, pigmentary changes and scarring, therefore it is important that all aftercare instructions are followed diligently.
Are the results permanent?
Yes, the results of each treatment are permanent in that we are physically removing small amounts of skin and tightening the overall area. It is important to note that Plasma Lid Lifting will not stop the onset of further ageing, and so the effects will gradually diminish over time as the eyelid area naturally becomes more saggy with age, as is also the case with a surgical blepharoplasty. Factors such as smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, poor diet and UV damage from sun exposure can all contribute to further ageing of the skin. Results are therefore expected to last 2-3 years, and the treatments can be repeated.
How many treatments are needed?
Sometimes we can achieve the desired result in one treatment and sometimes we need up to three treatments, which would be spaced 4-6 weeks apart. This varies depending on the amount of skin to be tightened/lifted, the thickness/heaviness of the the skin, and the amount of downtime that would be acceptable. We would discuss this with you at your initial planning consultation.
